Family Intervention Specialists provides substance abuse outreach, assessment/screening, intervention and case management services to families involved with the child welfare system.
Program Goals:
- Protect and ensure the safety of children.
- Prevent and remediate the consequences of substance abuse on families involved in protective supervision, or at risk of being involved in protective supervision, by reducing alcohol and drug abuse.
- Plan for permanency and reunify health, intact families, and
- Support families in recovery.
Eligibility and Referrals
Parents/caregivers, significant other, household residents and their children who are referred by child welfare, protective investigators, or a dependency court in which substance abuse is suspected as a contributing factor to abuse/neglect allegations are eligible to receive FIS services.
Referrals may be made during the initial child abuse/neglect investigation or at any point during child protective supervision or out-of-home care.
The Family Intervention Specialists provide substance abuse outreach, assessment/screening, intervention and case management. It is important to understand that FIS does not function as the primary treatment counselor, but acts as consultant and coordinator with protective service providers.
Services are provided Monday through Friday with flexible hours to meet the needs of the families they support. If feasible, some of the direct family support services will be provided in-home.
FIS Services include:
- Referrals
- Screenings/Initial assessment
- Linkage to specialized service providers and treatment
- Case Management
- Motivation and support for family to assist in removing barriers to successful substance abuse treatment outcomes
